A Special Tribute to Patrick Kavanagh
17th November 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm
€5All Shakes Members and Friends,
What Joyce did for Dublin, Patrick Kavanagh’s poetry did for the strong grey soil of Monaghan, revealing the unsentimental truth of rural Irish Life and the mystic claims land makes upon the heart.
A special evening of to commemorate the work of that great poet Patrick Kavanagh will take place in the Teachers’ Club, Room 4, on the night of Saturday,
17th November, at 7.30 p.m
Patrick Kavanagh died on 30th November 1967, so, while we were not able to run the event then, happily we have a date close to
30th November this year.
The evening will follow a similar format to the last two very enjoyable poetry evenings, and will again be co-ordinated by Mary Dowling and Mary Howard.
So, select your favourite piece from Kavanagh’s oeuvre – poetry, prose or song – to present on the night along with a short résumé telling us why you have chosen it in not more than one minute! While the emphasis of the evening is on Kavanagh’s own words, some may instead wish to contribute a piece about the poet.
All presentations should run for no longer than five minutes.
To avoid duplication submit titles of your first and second choices as soon as possible please, and certainly before 21st October – it will be a first come, first choice system! And please submit to both marytdowling@gmail.com and mhmaryshoward@gmail.com
It would be helpful if you could also include your telephone number.
We are looking forward to a big turnout for an entertaining evening with tea, refreshments, and great Kavanagh lore!
We ask for a contribution of €5 per person to cover the costs of the evening.
Everybody is welcome of course whether you wish to present, or just enjoy listening.
