The Trusting and the Maimed is the title of a collection of short stories written by James Plunkett in the late 1940s and early 1950s and published in 1959. It has been hailed as ‘one of the best volumes to have come out of Ireland’. ( Irish Literature, edited by Robert Hogan, 1979). The short story of the same name is considered to be one of Plunkett’s finest and most lyrical stories.
The story centres on the plight of a young unmarried girl who becomes pregnant in Ireland in the early 1950’s. It focuses, episodically, on the responses of friends and family to her situation and on their conditioning by the social and religious values of the time.
